One night they can't forget...

Tess McMann lives her life according to the secrets she's sworn to keep the father who won't acknowledge her, the sister who doesn't know she exists, and the mother who's content playing mistress to a prominent businessman. When she meets the distractingly cute Dylan Kingsley at a prestigious summer program and falls in love, Tess allows herself to imagine a life beyond these secrets. But when summer ends, so does their relationship—Dylan heads off to Canton College while Tess enrolls at the state university.

One love they can't ignore...

Two years later, a scholarship brings Tess to Canton and back into Dylan's life. Their attraction is as strong as ever, but Dylan has a girlfriend…who also happens to be Tess's legitimate half-sister. Tess refuses to follow in her mother's footsteps, which leaves her only one choice break the rules she’s always followed, or allow Dylan to slip away for a second time.

...And only one chance to get things right.

Part of a series but a stand alone read with a HEA. As a rule I don't care for college age romances. I find them to be a bit immature and too much game playing. This story is set in a college setting and the characters are the ones that are extremely smart. As such I found them to be more mature than most. The story is being told by a young woman that is the bastard child of her mother and her very wealthy "keeper". Of course, they are in love so that excuses all behavior. Even though he is married and has a daughter, younger than the heroine, he still keeps his mistress on the side and she is content or accepting of the lifestyle she has chosen. I don't think either one of the parents ever gave a thought to how their actions have effected the child. As such, she grew up with a "dad" that came to see them on occasion but she was taught from a very early age to not tell anyone he was her father, don't acknowledge him in public and don't really expect him to behave like a normal father would. The story starts as she is finishing high school and looking forward to attending college.

She is near genius level in a very scientific field. She has been accepted at the very prestigious college that her father attended and has a few buildings named after him. He is not as pleased as she thought he would be. He wants her to attend the state school thereby leaving his school for his legitimate daughter. With her academic record and her brains she really deserves the better school but he talks her into going to the state school by bribing her with funds to attend. After her second year she has grown, become more worldly and is determined to stand up for herself and no longer take a backseat as the "secret child". She gets accepted into the school with no problem and even gets a few scholarships, etc. but she still needs to get a job to pay for some essentials. Her mother has next to nothing, only what the "lover" deems to give her. They are just above poverty level while he and his legal family lives in a mansion with everything they could possibly want. Of course, the mother chose this lifestyle so she can't complain. The daughter did not choose it.

There is a lot of drama involving a young man, a health scare for the "real" daughter and lessons to be learned. I found it to be a very good story and I could hardly put it down because the story just keep moving with no slow parts. There are no wild sex scenes even though they are of that age but there is a definite romance and a coming of age with the love she shares with the hero of the story. I definitely recommend this read. it is very good. I don't ever remember reading a book where the story was told by the bastard child and how her life and thinking was effected by the actions of others that she had no control over. She did come to understand a few reasons why her mother did what she did but she was determined to not be her mother. A good read.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 5/5/18

One Only Canton Book 1 eBook Viv Daniels Reviews

Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. This is the first time I have read anything by this author. I can't wait for the next book in this series! The feelings that I went through as I read this story ranged from anger to heartbreak and then happiness. I hated the way Tess was treated by her father. I hated the way he made her feel that she wasn't important and was a secret from everyone. How he was never there for her when she needed him. She couldn't even have a relationship with a guy because of her family secret. I cried for everything she had to go through. Dylan and Tess met right before they both went to college an had a one night stand. She found out that Dylan was going to attend the college she wanted to but couldn't because of her father and his rules to keep their secret. Meanwhile Dylan likes her and wants a relationship with her but she walks away from him even though she likes him. Two years later she gets a scholarship to the college . She finds out Dylan is dating her sister. The emotional roller coaster that this story takes you through is one you'll never forget. The love these two have for each other is so wonderful you can't help but root for Tess to get her happy ever after. This story I one of the best I have read in a while. Thanks for a wonderful story Viv Daniels!
There were numerous times during the reading of this book that I felt as if I needed to know and understand where Dylan's mind was in the play of this story. But then, after a bit of frustration, the main gist of his awareness and thoughts became clear. I also kept having this terrible fear that Dylan was playing with Tess. Msg Daniel's knows how to write a story where the guy is a guy --mysterious, weird, and holding his thoughts close to his chest. Tess, on the other hand is typical woman, analyzing and thinking every particle of every mood, word, and deed. The backstory of Tesses' "legitimacy" and her mom's relationship with her dad drove nearly everything in Tess' life, and ultimately it was the products of the convoluted backstory who became the ones to see a difficult situation and move to overcome it. Wonderful deep emotional love between a couple who truly were destined to be together.
